English as a Second Language

The Strong Middle School English as a Second Language (ESL) Program provides services to identified English Learners (ELs) in Grades 6-8. The goal of the program is to assist students in language acquisition and academic language skills so that the ELs can succeed in an English-only classroom.
 
English Language Development (ELD) Program
Newcomers, students with less than 1 year in a U.S. school and/or scored 1.9 or below for their composite score on W-APT or WIDA, are eligible for the English Language Development Program. These courses are designed to provide students with bilingual language support in all core and elective classes.

Bridge Program
The Bridge Program is for students who scored 2.0-3.4 for their composite score on W-APT or WIDA and/or
have successfully completed all available ELD courses provided at Melvindale High School. These courses are designed to provide students with bilingual language support in all core and elective classes.
