SMS Students Qualify for Michigan History Day State Competition

This semester seventh and eighth graders have been diligently working on interest-based research projects for Michigan History Day, a state affiliate of National History Day. This year’s theme is “Turning Points in History.” Students created original oral performances, papers, websites, documentaries and exhibits based on their research using primary sources.

Strong held a local Michigan History Day event earlier in February with students visiting their presentations in Senior Hall and asking questions in preparation for the district competition downtown.

On the day of competition, judges interviewed the participants at their exhibits and provided suggestions on how to score more points in future meets. Please join us in congratulating Aiyana Hinojosa and Mateo Peralta Garcia for their achievement as a District Finalist in the Exhibit Category! With this achievement they have qualified for the state competition in Mt. Pleasant at Central Michigan University to be held the last week of April. The Strong Middle School Social Studies Department is proud to have them represent the school at the state level.
