Explore Activity: Atoms, Molecules, and Extended Structures

In this activity, you will explore various crystalline substances under a microscope and use what you see as a model to identify individual atoms, molecules, repeating subunits, and extended structures.

C.O.: Students will be able to demonstrate application of atoms, molecules, and extended structures by completing the Crystalline Structures Lab activities.
L.O.: Students will write and draw descriptions of salt, sugar and sand using microscopes and the lab sheet directions.

What are molecules made of?
In this activity, you will be using lego blocks to represent atoms of various elements from the Periodic Table.
*Note: there is an opportunity to earn extra credit at the end of this slide deck.

Students will be able to demonstrate analysis of combining atoms by building molecular models of various compounds.
Students will type to communicate information about molecular models and pure substances.

Using the information you learned in class, practice counting the number of elements and atoms that make up one molecule of a particular compound.


Students will demonstrate analysis of chemical formulas by determining the number of atoms of each element by completing the practice slides.

If you did not complete the Stations Lab assignment for the week of October 5, you should take this opportunity to earn more points for the assignment. This lab has been modified to enable your teacher to quickly assess your work and return the results back to you.

The Lab Answer Sheet must be turned in by Monday (October 12, 2020) at 11:59pm. There are no exceptions. Last week, you were given 3.5 hours of class time to complete the Stations Lab, and there was also an additional hour provided on Friday for extra help.

Please note that you can only earn up to 25 of the original 30 points for this assignment (-5 points penalty for not meeting last week's deadline).

You will be working through a series of lab stations to learn more about the structure of atoms. You do not need to complete all of the stations at one time, but make sure you have them all completed by Friday, October 9, 2020 by 3:00pm.

During this school year, we will be using Pixton, which is a cartoon creation tool that can be used to enhance the learning process and allow you to showcase what you know.
